Marta Costa

Marta graduated from the Universidade Tecnica de Lisboa (FMV-UTL), Portugal, in 2001. After five years combining first opinion small animal practice with work as a clinical pathologist, she completed a Masters in Medical Microbiology in 2007 and became a lecturer in Veterinary Clinical Pathology and Infectious Diseases at Universidade Lusofona, in Lisbon. In 2009 she moved to the UK to undertake a clinical pathology residency at the University of Bristol, where she remained as a clinical pathologist, and later as a lecturer in Veterinary Clinical Pathology. During that time she obtained her FRCpath and ECVCP diploma. She has remained actively linked to microbiology and is a member of the Study Group for Veterinary Microbiology of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESGVM/ESCMID). In 2020 she started at Idexx UK, where she works as a Clinical Pathologist and UK Deputy Head of Veterinary Clinical Microbiology. Marta's special interests lie in the diagnosis of infectious diseases, antimicrobial sensitivity testing, biomarker use and development, and all that pertains to a microscope, where she finds beauty every day. She tries to conciliate her love for teaching, research and clinical practice on a daily basis.
