Thromboembolic disease and coagulation disorders represent some of the most challenging and rapidly evolving areas in small animal medicine.

This intensive two-day course brings together expertise in Cardiology, Emergency and Critical care to provide veterinarians with a practical, evidence-based approach to understanding, diagnosing, treating, and preventing thromboembolic disease in dogs and cats.

Designed for general practitioners, interns, and residents, the program combines lectures, case-based discussions, interactive panels, and hands-on workshops to bridge the gap between theory and clinical practice.

Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of hemostasis, hypercoagulability, thromboembolic omplications associated with cardiac disease, and the latest advances in antithrombotic therapy and critical care management.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

Understand the physiological mechanisms underlying thrombosis and hemostasis.
Recognize common causes of bleeding and thrombotic disorders in dogs and cats.
Interpret coagulation testing, including TEG and ROTEM.
Utilize cardiac and point-of-care ultrasound to identify thromboembolic disease.
Diagnose and manage feline arterial thromboembolism and pulmonary thromboembolism.
Select appropriate antithrombotic therapies and monitoring strategies.
Manage complex coagulopathies and thrombotic emergencies in the critical care setting.
Apply evidence-based prevention strategies in high-risk cardiac patients.
Integrate cardiology and emergency-critical care perspectives into daily clinical practice.

This highly interactive program is designed to provide immediately applicable clinical skills while offering participants a deeper understanding of the evolving science of thrombosis and coagulation in veterinary medicine.

Ronald Li
DVM, MVetMed, PhD, Dipl. ACVECC Relatore

Dr. Li is currently an Associate Professor of Emergency and Critical Care at the North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina. He is the principal investigator of the Comparative Platelet and Neutrophil Physiology Laboratory. After obtaining his DVM from the University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, Dr. Li completed a rotating internship in Toronto, where he developed a keen interest in emergency and critical care medicine. He worked as an emergency clinician for one year before completing a residency and Master’s of Veterinary Medicine (MVetMed) in small animal emergency and critical care at the Royal Veterinary College (UK) in 2014. Dr. Li became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (DACVECC) in 2014 before pursuing a PhD in Integrative Pathobiology at the University of California, Davis, where he studied platelet and neutrophil biology. His research interests include procoagulant platelets in health and diseases, novel hemostatic therapies, antithrombotic treatments, immunothrombosis and precision medicine. He is committed to training clinician scientists and bridging the gap between basic science and clinical research to benefit clinical patients. His clinical interests include diagnosis and treatment of congenital platelet disorders, respiratory failure and sepsis. Dr. Li is the Co-Director of Veterinary Scholars Program and principal investigator of the NIH T35 Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Training Program, responsible for overseeing DVM students who participate in an immersive 10-week research training program.

Joshua Stern
DVM, PhD, Dipl. ACVIM (Cardiology) Relatore

Dr. Joshua Stern serves as the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He is also the Vladimir Cader Feline Health Research Distinguished Faculty Chair and a Professor of Cardiology in the Department of Clinical Sciences at NC State. Dr. Stern obtained his DVM from Ohio State University, completed his cardiology residency training at NC State, and obtained a PhD focusing on translational cardiac genetics at Washington State University. He is the Principal Investigator for the Stern Translational Cardiac Genetics and Pharmacogenomics Laboratory which focuses on training clinician scientists and developing novel therapies for inherited heart disease. Dr. Stern serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine and the 2023-2026 President for the Subspecialty of Cardiology in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. He was honored with the 2024 AVMF Career Achievement Award in Feline Medicine. Dr. Stern is an avid supporter of clinician scientists and is passionate about training the next generation of veterinary academic leaders. Together, with his laboratory teams, Dr. Stern has published over 150 peer-reviewed research manuscripts contributing to the advancement of companion animal genetics and translational cardiology.

Chiara Leo
DVM, Dipl. ACVIM & ECVIM-CA (Oncology), MSc (Oncology, Phytotherapy), FHEA. Relatore

Mi sono laureata a pieni voti all’Università degli Studi di Milano nel 2003 in medicina veterinaria. Ho completato un internship di Oncologia all’università di Zurigo nel 2007 e successivamente un residency di Oncologia all’Animal Oncology and Imaging Center a Zug (Svizzera) con periodi di formazione presso la Washington State University, al termine del quale, dopo aver superato gli esami richiesti dal College Americano di Oncologia veterinaria, ho ottenuto il diploma ACVIM (Oncology). Dal 2011 al 2015 ho ricoperto la posizione di lecturer in Oncologia al Royal Veterinary College di Londra (UK) e nel 2015 ne sono diventata Head of Service. Nello stesso anno ho ottenuto il titolo FHEA (Fellow in Higher Education). Nel gennaio 2016 ho lasciato l’Inghilterra per tornare in Italia e diventare responsabile del servizio di oncologia dell’Istituto Veterinario di Novara. Dal 2023 sono responsabile dei programmi di residency del gruppo AniCura Europa e svolgo ancora attività di consulenza oncologica per l’Inghilterra. Sono fondatrice e faccio parte del comitato scientifico Unisvet. Ho ottenuto il diploma ECVIM-CA (Oncology) de facto nel 2021. Sono vice presidente di ESVONC (European Society Veterinary Oncology) dal 2022. Dedico il mio tempo libero alle passeggiate in montagna con la mia famiglia ed i miei cani Arturo e Mowgli.

Tommaso Rosati
DVM, Dipl. ACVECC, Dipl. ECVECC Relatore

Tommaso si laurea con lode presso l’Università di Pisa. Dapprima intraprende un internship in Anestesia presso la Facoltà di Helsinki (Finlandia). A seguire si sposta all’University College Dublin (Irlanda) dove svolge un internship in Anestesia e Terapia Intensiva e a seguire un rotating internship. Nel 2017 si trasferisce negli Stati Uniti dove intraprende un residency program in Emergency and Critical Care presso la Facoltà di Medicina Veterinaria dell’Università di Davis (California). Ottiene il Diploma americano di ECC nel 2020 e quello Europeo nel 2021. Attualmente lavora come senior lecturer presso il dipartimento di Emergenza e Terapia Intensiva della facoltà di Zurigo. Nel 2023 ha ottenuto il certificato di RECOVER Instructor. I suoi interessi di clinici e di ricerca spaziano dalla ventilazione meccanica e la terapia extracorporea, ai disturbi elettrolitici e coagulativi.
