INSIDE THE NOSE: ADVANCED IMAGE GUIDED INTERVENTIONAL PROCEDURES

Recent and important innovations have been made in the field of endonasal interventional endoscopic and fluoroscopic procedures. During the masterclass you will have the opportunity to explore the most common obstructive nasal pathologies and their most current therapeutic innovations. These topics are highly specialized, complex and associated with long learning curves. For this reason Unisvet has given you the unique and exceptional opportunity to listen lectures from the “fathers” of these techniques, world opinion leaders. Dr. Jane Ladlow will show you how to manage the more complex cases of Brachycephalic Syndrome: lectures will be focused on second level treatment of obstructions of the nasal vestibule and turbinates. Dr. Chick Weisse will address very interesting topics such as the palliative treatment of nasal neoplasms through chemoembolization and the management of nasopharyngeal stenosis in dogs and cats.

Jane has nearly 20 years’ experience as a European Specialist in small Animal Surgery and over the last 10 years she has focused on upper airway disease in dogs. In 2005 she started researching brachycephalic obstructive airway disease and with Dr Nai-Chieh Liu at the University of Cambridge she devised a non-invasive method of assessing airway function in the bulldog, French bulldog and pug and also introduced a clinical grading system for BOAS. During this time she developed good relationships with breeders and worked with the breed clubs to introduce health schemes in these three breeds that included BOAS. The research has also led to the validation of some new surgical techniques (laser turbinectomy, laryngeal surgeries) that were shared by Prof Oectering of Liepzig. The project led to the development of The Kennel Club/ University of Cambridge Respiratory Function Grading (RFG) Scheme that was launched in 2019 to facilitate the breeding of healthy dogs in bulldogs, French bulldogs and pugs. Jane is continuing this work by promoting the RFG scheme and now intends to start looking at some of the other brachycephalic breeds.

Laurea in medicina veterinaria nel 2008. Nello stesso anno ottiene una borsa di studio di 6 mesi presso Unimi per un progetto di ricerca sulla Sindrome Brachicefalica e segue un tirocinio con il dott. Romanelli. Nel 2009, grazie al progetto europeo Leonardo, lavora per 6 mesi presso una clinica a Friburgo occupandosi di chirurgia dei tessuti molli. Dal 2009 al 2012 svolge un dottorato di ricerca in patologia chirurgica presso Unimi. Dal 2012 al 2015 collabora con Unimi occupandosi di clinica e ricerca nell’ambito dell’endoscopia e della chirurgia. Dal 2014 è responsabile del servizio di chirurgia della Clinica Veterinari Città di Monza. Dal 2018 collabora con la Clinica Veterinaria Malpensa per i servizi di chirurgia naso-orecchio- gola e chirurgia laparoscopica mininvasiva ed è responsabile dell'unità di endoscopia. Dal 2010 è relatore per corsi UNISVET di chirurgia ed endoscopia, nel 2018 è co- direttore dell’Executive Master in Clinical Endoscopy e nel 2021 entra a far parte del comitato scientifico UNISVET in qualità di responsabile dei corsi di chirurgia dei tessuti molli e endoscopia. È autore di comunicazioni a corsi e congressi e articoli su riviste scientifiche internazionali, co autore del testo Chirurgia di Naso Orecchio e Gola nel Cane e nel Gatto edito da Edra nel 2023.

Chick Weisse

Chick Weisse, VMD, DACVS completed his small animal surgical residency training at the Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in 2002 and then pursued advanced training through a customized fellowship in Interventional Radiology at the (human) Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in 2003. He held dual appointments in surgery and radiology as an Assistant Professor at both the veterinary and human hospitals, respectively (Univ. of Pennsylvania) before coming to the Animal Medical Center in New York City in 2009 as staff surgeon and Director of Interventional Radiology Services. Educational interests include expanding minimally-invasive veterinary interventional radiology (IR) techniques through describing new procedures and training veterinarians. Research interests include IR techniques for non-resectable and metastatic cancers, palliative stenting for malignant obstructions, vascular anomalies such as portosystemic shunts and AVMs, and stenting for tracheal collapse.
